Travel to France

The first place that many visitors head for in France is Paris – after all, that’s where the Eiffel tower is, and the city of romance certainly won’t be a disappointment. But there are other places in France with their own specific charms that are equally worthy of a visit. Reserve one or more gites in France in the more unusual destinations and you will have a great time, often far away from the crowds.

To visit all these places in one trip will be a challenge, or at least require several weeks and some careful planning – so book your gites and your France car hire well in advance if possible to be sure of best availability and prices.

The Normandy Landing beaches from the Second World War are in the north of France, and are a popular and moving pilgrimage destination, especially with American visitors to the country. Don’t miss the famous Bayeux tapestry while you are in the area, or the beautiful island of Mont St Michel.

The coast of the southern Vendee is quite undiscovered compared with Brittany just to the north, but has its own special charm and inland from here are the famous Chateau of the Loire Valley.

Further south, the Dordogne region is known as the centre of prehistory in Europe, above all for the discovery of the Lascaux Caves and their fine cave paintings, dating back 30,000 years. But keep going south and you will reach the northern Lot-et-Garonne department – as beautiful as the Dordogne, yet much quieter. Visit the remarkable medieval village of Monpazier and the Chateau at Bonaguil as an introduction to the region.

Next head a little to the east into the Lot region to discover villages such as Rocamadour and Belcastel, then south into the heart of the Pyrenees – if you are feeling brave you can visit the miracle town at Lourdes, otherwise head for the mountains and a perfect walk through flower-laden meadows.

Enjoy your visit!
